British fashion icon Pam Hogg, known for dressing the likes of Lady Gaga, Naomi Campbell, and  Debbie Harry of Blondie, unveiled her latest collection, ‘Of Gods and Monsters,’ in a striking and evocative exhibition at Emalin Gallery in celebration of the 40th anniversary of London Fashion Week. ‘Of Gods and Monsters’ seamlessly merges Hogg’s signature punk aesthetic with pressing political themes and serves as a powerful call to action, confronting global injustices and the impacts of conflict.

Pam Hogg’s work is often likened to contemporaries such as Vivienne Westwood, who also took inspiration from the 80s punk aesthetic that rejected the mainstream fashion industry.

In a statement accompanying the launch, Hogg calls for action:

“It’s an unfair and imbalanced world. There is no time like the present to correct this .. please use your voice.”

Gods and Monsters, a collection inspired by the struggles of the displaced and marginalised, presents a raw and visceral commentary on today’s geopolitical landscape. Pam Hogg underscored this intense and urgent message during her ICON Award acceptance speech this September, using her platform to raise awareness of humanitarian crises.

Of Gods and Monsters, with its focal piece, Palestinian Home featured a Marie Antoinette-inspired headpiece adorned with 18th-century miniature portraits, a blush trim, and gold-encrusted hanging fruit.

The opulence of the fabrics juxtaposed with the luggage trunk on the model’s bag brought to the surface the fact that war, displacement, and disruption can happen to anyone, regardless of social rank.

Many ensembles were fashioned out of bulbous rubbish bag-like silhouettes, bound together with rope and discarded materials. Striking headpieces, deconstructed garments, luxurious velvets, buckled belts, and animal bones serve as poignant reminders of the fragility of life in times of conflict. This aspect of the collection brings a human touch to the political commentary, making it more relatable and impactful.

Blindfolded models, clad in loosely assembled designs held together with buckles and safety pins, echo the uncertainty and chaos faced by those stuck in war zones as society turns a blind eye to their suffering.

Pam Hogg’s continued commitment to sustainability shines in this collection, with each piece crafted entirely from repurposed materials found in her studio. Reclaiming beauty from the broken and reflecting on the creative process, the Pam Hogg brand makes strides in reducing waste while maintaining a luxurious look.

For the first time in her career, Pam Hogg has had the creative freedom to exhibit her work in a gallery setting, blurring the boundaries between fashion and art. Multi-award-winning graduate from Glasgow, Pam Hogg is a self-taught fashion maven with many accolades and holds three fashion awards from Scotland, plus an MA in Printed Textiles from the Royal College of Art and an Honorary Doctorate from The University of Glasgow / Glasgow School of Art (2016).

Pam Hogg’s namesake label launched in 1981, and her collection was described as flamboyant and fearless. It is perhaps even more potent today as she holds a mirror up to society through her disordered and disrupted designs.
