Tips To Battle Brain Fog

Tips To Battle Brain Fog

Do you ever enter a room and suddenly forget why you went there, or are you constantly looking for your keys, that piece of paper or your phone?

Do you often find it challenging to focus and concentrate?

If so, you may well be a victim of brain fog.

What is Brain Fog?

My definition of “brain fog” is anytime you have trouble remembering things for a moment, a general lack of mental clarity, poor concentration, or can’t focus; you could be suffering from brain fog.

uses of brain fog

Often accompanies chronic illnesses such as Lupus, chronic fatigue syndrome, anaemia, and diabetes. Brain fog can usually signal some trouble with inflammation or changes in our blood sugar levels.

Various environmental factors/scenarios can also contribute, such as.:

  • Chronic stress
  • Lack of sleep
  • Hormone changes – such as during pregnancy, menopause
  • Poor nutrition
  • Having foods that you are allergic or sensitive to
  • Certain medications
  • Chemotherapy

Cancer patients often experience something similar called “chemo brain”, which also causes them to forget things after their treatments; interestingly enough, both pregnant women and older women during menopause can struggle to remember things and to concentrate due to their specific hormone changes. We can also suffer from brain fog when we’re tired, taking certain medications or depressive conditions.

How to Combat Brain Fog

It can be as simple as making a few lifestyle changes. However, it also indicates there are more significant issues at play.

While there is no medication to treat it Brain Fog, here are a few tips that might make life easier.

1 Improve your sleep

Sleep and mental and physical health are enormously intertwined and just as important as diet and exercise; to maintain good health, try to sleep more often, at least 7 -8 hours and keep a consistent bedtime routine.

2. Manage stress

It is well-known that your mental acuity can suffer when you don’t manage stress. Stress drains your body and can lead to high blood pressure, a weakened immune system, and your mind, possibly leading to depression. Practising mindful meditation could prove beneficial, or even getting into yoga.

3. Go outside

Make an effort to go outside for sunshine and get more Vitamin D into your system as much as possible; this is also good for getting you away from your desk and distancing your work stress.

4. Fix your diet

Back away from processed foods and pick up some B-12; this is good advice for every part of your life, such as increasing your energy, maintaining a healthy weight and avoiding brain fog. Refined sugars appear in processed foods like sweets, sodas, pasta, white bread, and more, while B12 keeps your nerve and blood cells healthy and helps prevent anaemia, making people feel tired and weak. Beef, tuna, salmon and eggs are high in B12.

5. Keep a daily to-do list

Keep a small notepad where you can write down tasks that need to be done. If you are in the middle of something important and get interrupted, writing down what you must do later will help you remember.
If you do not like writing notes by hand, use a notepad on your cell phone, tablet, or computer to type in a short to-do list electronically.

While I hope some of these tips can help, it is essential to take brain fog seriously and speak to a doctor about what may be causing it.
