#SecondHandSeptember 6 Great Ways To Get Involved

With #SecondHandSeptember a day away, it is time for me to start thinking about the change in weather and my autumn wardrobes.

Back in the day, before bills and mortgages, I would run out and buy a new wardrobe every season. Unfortunately, those days are long gone. Now, I desire a selection of thoughtfully curated capsule wardrobes that contain interesting prices and express my personal style.

Thrift shopping has always been more than just a pastime for me. It’s a personal journey, whether I am rummaging through piles of clothing at boot sales or flicking through rails at thrift shops or kilo sales. There is a deep emotional connection in finding that special item in your size, knowing that no one else is likely to have it. However, I now aim to take a more conscious approach to my shopping habits. When I came across Oxfam’s ‘ #SecondHandSeptember, ‘ it felt like a perfect opportunity to push myself further and make my wardrobe more planet-friendly.

What is #SecondHandSeptember

The #SecondHandSeptember campaign, a 30-day collective effort led by Oxfam, is designed to prompt a shift in our approach to fashion. By abstaining from purchasing new clothes for a month, we can break free from the fast fashion cycle and significantly reduce our environmental impact. It’s a chance for us to come together and make a tangible difference for our planet.

Oxfam research has found that in the UK alone, around 11 million clothing items end up in landfills daily, contributing significantly to environmental pollution and waste. This is largely due to the fast fashion cycle, where clothes are produced and discarded at an alarming rate.

It’s crucial to remember that each of us wields the power to make a significant difference. Simple changes to our shopping habits, such as buying secondhand, can profoundly impact us and the world around us. You can change the world, one purchase at a time.

So, by pledging to shop only secondhand for 30 days or more, you can give clothes a longer life by keeping them from landfills. And if you shop with Oxfam, you’ll be reinvesting your money into helping the poorest people on the planet earn a fair living and beat poverty.”

What excites me about #SecondHandSeptember is that it’s more than just a one-month challenge; it’s a brilliant way to rethink our shopping habits, embrace a more sustainable lifestyle, and inspire lasting change. It’s a step towards a more sustainable future, and it’s a future we can all look forward to.
