Purpl Discounts – Cost of Lupus
Living with Lupus can be a real challenge. Not only is the condition itself, but the various financial burdens that affect daily life any lupus patients need to pay for lifelong medications to help manage symptoms and prevent flare-ups as Lupus is not currently included in the list of medical exemptions.
While in the UK, the NHS provide us with free medical care, some people with Lupus explore alternative or complementary treatments to provide relief, which can often be expensive and an ongoing cost. Let’s also not forget the additional cost-related lifestyle adjustments required, as managing Lupus is more than health; it’s about living the same standard of living as someone who doesn’t have Lupus or another condition or disability.

Cost-related lifestyle adjustments can include but are not limited to, healthier eating, which can mean more expenses as organic and anti-inflammatory foods often cost more than processed meals. Increased pain or limited mobility may mean needing to purchase expensive ready meals, higher energy costs, accessible transport, mobility aids, and the list goes on and on.
Depending on the severity of their condition, those with Lupus may or may not be able to work and have to limit their hours to combat the symptoms. While some may be eligible for benefits to aid them financially, Lupus affects patients in many ways, but many would not.
Living with Lupus shouldn’t define someone’s life, but it can significantly impact financially. According to Scope, It can cost, on average, nearly £1000 extra a month for those who are living with a medical condition or disability.

Purpl Discounts Collaboration
With this in mind, I am excited to collaborate with Purpl, the UK’s first discount programme.
What Is Purpl?
Launched earlier this year, Purpl has already partnered with around 60 brands to offer discounts on everything from disability aids and health to fashion and technology. These brands include big names such as Hoover, Poundland, and Debenhams, offering a wide range of products and services at discounted rates.
With the intention of being about more than just discounts. Purpl also provides relevant content, inspirational stories, and shared learning.
Founded by Georgina Colman, who lives with multiple sclerosis, Purpl is more than just a discount programme. It’s a community of people who understand the financial challenges of living with a disability. As a closed group exclusively for disabled people, Purpl offers a platform for sharing experiences, tips, and support. To sign up for Purpl, people must verify their disability status by submitting government or council documents like PIP/DLA Award letters, blue badge and other official standardised documents when signing up for the discounts. Once verified, users will then gain access to their exclusive discounts and offers.
Refer to their document upload guide for a full list and examples; however, Access Card and National Disability ID Card holders receive automatic membership eligibility.
