I can’t ignore that over-the-knee boots are notoriously tricky to style without looking like Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman (Not ideal for in the office or for that lunch with the girls)

If you are wearing a maxi dress, opt for a cropped jacket such as a leather or suede moto jacket. If you wear a Jumper/shirt, dress or skirt, keep the coat the same length to keep the entire look polished.
